The European Union fined Apple and Meta $800 million for violating the Digital Markets Act, a new law designed to prevent anti-competitive practices by Big Tech. Meta is accused of forcing users to either pay for Facebook and Instagram subscriptions or to make their personal data available to advertisers.

The European Union has ordered Apple and Meta to pay a combined €700m (£599m) in the first fines it has issued under legislation intended to curb the power of big tech. It has issued a €500m (£428m) fine to Apple over its App Store,

The European Commission has fined Apple $570 million after concluding the company prevented developers from steering customers outside its App Store to access cheaper deals. The EU also fined Meta $229 million over its "pay or consent" system after it violated rules on the use of personal data on Facebook and Instagram.

Instagram released its new standalone free video editing app, Edits. It was introduced earlier this year when TikTok and its companion video editing app, CapCut, were briefly removed from iOS and Android app stores for US customers.

Earlier this year, right as TikTok and other ByteDance apps were temporarily pulled from Apple and Google’s app stores, Meta announced that it was working on a new video editing app tailored to Instagram creators.
