At least 26 people were killed and 17 others wounded when gunmen opened fire on tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir, the worst assault in years targeting civilians in a restive region that has seen an anti-India rebellion for more than three decades.

Local tour operators, hoteliers and ponywalas held big protests in Pahalgam and adjacent villages. Carrying placards, the protesters were raising slogans against attackers

Following the Pahalgam attack, over 1,500 people have been detained in Kashmir Valley. The attack, which killed 26 people, is believed to have been carried out by Pakistani terrorist group TRF.
