Mr. Lander, the New York City comptroller and a candidate for mayor, was handcuffed as he tried to steer a man past Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

The arrest of New York City Comptroller Brad Lander​ was denounced by many public officials, including many of the people who are his opponents in the Democratic mayoral primary.

New York City comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was arrested Tuesday by authorities at immigration court in Manhattan.A representative for Lander, a Democrat, said Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained him while he was escorting a person who had attended a hearing out of the building.
