TIRANA, Albania (AP) — Albania's Archbishop Anastasios, who revived the country's Orthodox Church after the fall of the communist regime in 1990, has died, the church said on Saturday.
Archbishop Anastasios, the head of the Albanian Orthodox Church for three decades, has died aged 95 in an Athens hospital after being airlifted to the Greek capital following a virus infection.
According to the 2023 census, Orthodox Christians in Albania make up about 7% of the country’s 2.4 million population, although the church says the actual number is higher.
