Lettuce or salad greens could be the source of Michigan’s outbreak of cyclosporiasis, an infection characterized by intense diarrhea, state health officials said Monday.

The illness, which has sickened thousands across much of the United States, is on track to contribute to the largest outbreak in recent history.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 843 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis were reported among people in the United States as of July 9.
