Air safety is under scrutiny following two recent incidents: an American Airlines flight evacuated in Denver after its landing gear caught fire, and a Southwest Airlines jet experienced a dramatic 500-foot plunge mid-air to avoid another aircraft on its way to Las Vegas.

Two Southwest Airlines flight attendants were hurt after pilots were alerted to another aircraft in the area when ascending from Burbank Airport.

The sudden maneuver was made during a Friday flight out of California after two collision safety alerts sounded in the cockpit, causing the pilots to take evasive action, the airline said.

A Southwest Airlines flight from Burbank made an emergency descent of 475 feet to avoid colliding with another aircraft before safely landing in Las Vegas on Friday.
