Former Mauritanian Finance Minister Sidi Ould Tah has been elected president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), the lender said on Thursday, after a poll during the bank's annual meeting in Ivory Coast.

The successor to Akinwumi Adesina is a discreet man, still largely unknown to the public. But the Mauritanian, who led the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) until now, is about to be thrust into the spotlight for the next five years.

The African Development Bank elected Sidi Ould Tah as its new president, installing a former Mauritanian finance minister at the helm of one of the most important multilateral institutions on the continent.

Bayern Munich has strengthened its defense ahead of the Club World Cup by signing Germany center back Jonathan Tah from its Bundesliga rival Bayer Leverkusen.

The Mauritanian beat four other candidates after three rounds of voting. He becomes the 9th president of the pan-African institution for the next five years.
