The Voting Rights Act of 1965 ended the discriminatory practices against Black voters that were prevalent in many states.

"This Court has been extraordinarily unfriendly to the Voting Rights Act over the last couple of decades," a voting rights expert told Newsweek.

The justices may limit the ability of courts to take race into account when trying to remedy under-representation by minority voters.
