Democrat Abigail Spanberger has won the Virginia governor’s race, the Associated Press projects, after campaigning on the economy and promises to stand up to Trump.

Voters in states across the country cast ballots in the first election since President Donald Trump returned to the White House.

Democrats took a victory lap on Wednesday after sweeping the first major elections since Donald Trump returned to the White House, a much-needed balm for a wounded party that had spent much of the last year desperately trying to find its footing.

The four elections that Trump targeted on social media broke handily for the Democrats, the first major political blow to the president since he reclaimed the Oval Office last year.
