Alabama’s first term secretary of state is forgoing a re-election bid, instead announcing that he’s throwing his hat into the ring for a different constitutional office
Allen, who grew up in Cottondale in Tuscaloosa County, becomes the second Republican to announce he is running for the seat, following Opelika pastor Dean Odle. The primary is in May 2026. Allen is the son of state Sen. Gerald Allen, R-Cottondale.
Allen’s tenure as Secretary of State drew national attention when, immediately after taking office, he withdrew Alabama from the Electronic Registration Information Center.
“On Election Day in Alabama, there are actually 67 elections that take place, not one,” Marshall County Democratic Chair Susan McKenney said in a statement released by the group. “Where there is a Democratic County Chair there is a Democratic County Committee that is organizing, recruiting, training, canvassing, and protecting our elections.”
Alabama's congressional map is the subject of a federal trial beginning Monday to decide if the state has to keep a new court-ordered district that led to the election of a second Black representative.
