Humpbacks engage in a unique & complex feeding method known as bubble-net feeding. First they dive below a school of fish, and then blow bubbles through their blowhole to herd and corral their prey. Two engineers from Cal Tech recently came out with an interesting model proposing that humpbacks exploit these bubble nets for feeding via loud vocalizations. Meaning, it is possible this bubble curtain is being used as a wave guide to concentrate the sound toward the center, along with the fish! 🎥:

Bubble-net feeding is a cooperative hunt where humpbacks trap fish with spiraling walls of bubbles, then surge upward together to gulp the whole school.
