The trend was inspired by Alexandra of Denmark, Princess of Wales, who in 1867 suffered rheumatic fever leaving her with a permanent limp. Women in high society mimicked her by wearing shoes with different heel heights, and some shops even sold mismatched pairs. Although Alexandra tried to hide her limp, critics decried the fad as tasteless. The trend eventually faded, but it remains an intriguing footnote in fashion hist
